Perfection from Precision
Matt Gallo says, “My goal is to give my sister Gina the best grapes in the world as the starting point for our family wines.”
The best wines come from the best grapes. Sounds simple. Yet many in the winemaking industry remain divided. Some call it a science. Some call it a mystery. Others still call it ‘terroir’. And yet each of these words describe small parts of the overall process of nurturing vines to produce fine grapes.
At Gallo Sonoma our philosophy is “Precision Fine Winegrowing”.
Precision Fine Winegrowing
Simply stated, Matt Gallo works to maximize winegrape quality and ensure the healthy maintenance of the vines while avoiding anything that could possibly have a negative impact on either the land or surrounding environment. The result is a unique method of vineyard management referred to as ‘Gallo Sustainable Practices’.
Practices Makes Perfect
The first governing principal of Gallo Sustainable Practices is our 50-50 Give Back Plan which is integral to our beliefs that we have an obligation to protect and give back to the land by planting vineyards in a way that preserves the local environment.
Julio Gallo instituted the policy of setting aside one acre of property to be used as wildlife habitat for every acre planted to vineyard in Sonoma County. Today, Julio’s grandson, Matt, continues this vision, managing a 6,000 acre property portfolio that balances 3,000 acres of natural habitat along with 3,000 acres of planted vineyard.
Minimize to the Maximum
The second governing principal of Gallo Sustainable Practices is our commitment to minimize the use of synthetic chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides in the vineyard.
Matt and his vineyardists continually search for natural replacements to synthetics while, at the same time, spend a great deal of time looking for ways to improve the effectiveness of synthetic inputs so that their quantities can be greatly reduced.
Taste is the Test
Whether you want to call it a mystery or a science, Gallo Sonoma’s philosophy of ‘Precision Fine Winegrowing’ that includes Gallo Sustainable Practices as followed by Matt, produces grapes year in and year out that his sister Gina uses to craft wines enjoyed the world over.
